Google to bring social networking to YouTube Search engine to unveil media and status updates feature for Gmail users.
Video productions on YouTube could soon be enhanced by a social networking function, it has been reported.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Google plans to introduce a service whereby Gmail users can make use of media and status updates, similar to those used on Twitter and Facebook.
They will then extend this to their other sites including YouTube, the news provider reports.
This could be good news for companies that use YouTube video productions for marketing as it will make it easier for video links to be shared and so could allow them to gain a greater audience.
The move has been seen by some experts as an attempt to take on established social networking sites.
Ray Valdes, an analyst at Gartner, told the Telegraph: "Anything Google does with Gmail should be seen as a defensive manoeuvre".
Research by the metrics company Hitwise recently revealed that more people are now accessing news sites in the US through Facebook than they are Google News.
