YouTube to show live sport event video productions Cricket from the Indian Premier League to be shown on video sharing site.
YouTube is to broadcast a live sporting event video production for the first time after securing rights to show Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket.
The development could significantly increase the site's viewing figures and so provide more opportunities for companies using video marketing.
As part of the deal, the Google owned site will show 60 IPL matches, starting in March.
YouTube will also be looking for sponsorship agreements as it seeks to make money from the project.
Bruce Daisley, Google UK's leader for YouTube and display, said: "We're keen to see how the community will take to live sport. There's a real interest in live events, so we're excited."
Despite being by far the market leader in online video streaming, YouTube is still losing $470 million (£287.5 million) a year, according to Credit Suisse.
Recent reports have suggested that Google are considering new ways to make the site profitable, raising the possibility of introducing subscription fees for dome premium content.
