YouTube may start charging subscription fees Monthly fees are being considered for some content to boost revenue.
Google owned YouTube may start charging monthly subscription fees for some of its content, it has been revealed.
In an interview with Reuters, Google's vice president of content partnerships, David Eun, said they were looking at new ways for the video sharing website to generate revenue and that subscriptions were a possibility.
For the moment, however, any additional fees will be for so-called premium content such as TV programmes and movies.
"We're making some interesting bets on long-form content; not all content is accessible to us with the advertising model," said Mr Eun.
However, Mr Eun insisted advertising would continue to be YouTube's main source of income.
"If we just continued to focus on our advertising model that would be enough opportunity to create meaningful revenue," he said. "The biggest opportunity today is advertising and we've just begun to scratch the surface."
The news comes as YouTube released a list of its most popular videos of 2009. Top of the chart was the video of Susan Boyle performing on Britain's Got Talent. Also in the top five were the trailer for Twilight film New Moon and an Evian advert.
