UK ecommerce sales set to rise

Companies may wish to use online video productions to win business from the ever increasing number of consumers turning to the internet to make purchases.

According to a report from research firm eMarketer, the number of people engaging in online shopping is set to rise significantly over the coming years.

It predicts that in 2010, 26 million people aged 14 and older in the UK - equating to 67.7 per cent of internet users in that age group - will make at least one online purchase per month.

Furthermore, the number of online buyers will rise by around four per cent annually over the next few years, reaching 72 per cent of all internet users by 2014.

Karin von Abrams, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the new report, said: "Online sales growth will continue to outpace growth in overall retail sales in 2010 and 2011, as more shoppers use the web to save time, stretch their pennies and buy items not readily available in nearby physical stores."

A recent study by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising found that the number of British adults who use the internet at least once a week now stands at 75 per cent of the population.
