Leading digital statistics measuring company comScore, Inc have released their facts on European mobile viewing from July 2009 to July 2010 and the findings are of great interest to anyone who produces video content.
Overall on-demand mobile video viewings in Europe are up 99 percent to 5.2 million mobile consumers across the 5 major European countries - U.K., Italy, France, Germany, and Spain. “The era of ‘video-on-the-go’ has finally arrived,” says comScore European VP Mobile, Jeremy Copp. “We’ve seen major developments throughout the mobile space – in networks, in devices and in software and applications – and now we’re seeing the result: a rapidly growing audience of consumers accessing video on their mobiles, be it broadcast, on-demand or sideloaded.”
Smartphones are at the forefront of the online video viewing trend with two out of three people viewing online video on a mobile device are those with smartphones such as Blackberry's and iPhones. Smartphone owners in the U.K. were responsible for 80.2 percent of all mobile video watching an increase over the European average.
The release of the Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy tablets are expected to drive these numbers even higher for 2011.
