Survey reveals sharp rise in internet use Number of Britons using the internet at least once a week has hit 75 per cent.
Online video productions now have the potential to reach a greater audience thanks to a sharp rise in the number of Britons using the internet.
The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA) has released its third TouchPoints survey which measures media consumption in Britain.
It found that the percentage of adults claiming to use the internet at least once a week now stands at 75 per cent, rising from 53 per cent in TouchPoints2, conducted in 2008.
Furthermore, the amount of time each person spends using the internet on average each day has risen by 38 per cent, from 1.3 hours to 1.8 hours.
A number of specific internet activities saw significant increases in popularity, not least watching TV online, which rose 216 per cent.
Listening to radio/podcasts (166 per cent), social networking (113 per cent) and looking at newspaper websites (61 per cent), also witnessed notable increases, said the IPA.
The results appear to support a recent study by UKOM, which found that the size of the UK internet audience grew by five per cent from 36.9 million people in May 2009 to 38.8 million people in May 2010.
