'Surge' in online video productions reported Study finds 69 per cent of adult US internet users have gone online to watch videos.
There has been a "surge" in the number of video productions being watched on the internet, a report has found.
According to the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, 69 per cent of adult US internet users, accounting for 52 percent of all American adults, have used the web to watch video.
While 18 to 29-year-olds still make up the largest group of viewers, there have been some significant changes in recent years in the types of videos people are watching, the study found.
Comedy or humourous videos are now the most commonly watched genre having superseded news in the three years since 2007.
Educational video productions have also seen a considerable rise in popularity, with 38 per cent of adults having viewed a video in this category, compared to 22 per cent in 2007.
"We are seeing a surge in online video watching that is driven by a combination of broadband access, the increasing use of social networking sites, and the popularity of video-sharing sites," explained Kristen Purcell, author of the report.
Recent figures from comScore revealed that US internet users watched 30.3 billion online videos during April this year.
