Social websites overtake search engines in UK

Photo for this news articleFor the first time, social networks are the most popular websites among UK internet users.

UK internet users now visit social websites more than they do search engines, meaning they could be an attractive platform for corporate video productions.

A report by Experian Hitwise found that social networking sites accounted for 11.88 per cent of UK web traffic during May 2010, compared to just 11.33 per cent spent using search engines, the first time the former has outperformed the latter.

The most visited social site was Facebook, but this was followed by video production streaming site YouTube.

However, this does not mean that video production users should not continue to pay attention to their search result rankings.

Google remains the most popular website overall, with 9.29 per cent of visits compared to Facebook's 7.04 per cent.

Robin Goad, Experian Hitwise's research director, said, "Although social networks and search engines perform different functions, they both act as gateways to the wider internet. This data illustrates the key role that social media now plays in so much online behaviour."

A recent Cisco Systems' Visual Networking Index Forecast, predicted video will make up 91 per cent of all internet traffic by 2014.
