Social networking increases four-fold in two years, says report Nearly half of internet users in Britain use social media sites, it has been revealed.
A new report has suggested social media sites may be a good platform for online video productions due to their rising popularity.
The latest IMRG/BPS Internet Access and Online Shopping in Britain report for the second quarter of 2010 revealed the number of internet users that visit social networking and blogging sites has grown to 48.9 per cent.
This represents a four-fold increase on the proportion that did so in the same period of 2008.
In comparison, the number using the internet for online search fell by 0.5 per cent during the first half of 2010 from 73.7 per cent to 73.2 per cent.
"While the figures may not have the search engines quaking in their boots just yet it does suggest to retailers that they need to consider the influence that social media has on consumers' purchasing decisions," said a statement from e-retail industry body IMRG.
The report follows recently released figures from comScore that reveal Facebook is now the third-most popular site for viewing video productions in the US.
