Project Canvas to be given go-ahead

Project Canvas, the BBC led operation to provide internet content through television sets, is expected to be approved this week.

The BBC and its partners in the project, which include BT and ITV, are planning to use set-top boxes to provide subscription-free on-demand content over the internet.

For its involvement to be permitted, the BBC needed approval from its governing body, the BBC Trust, which decides what appropriate use of licence fee money is.

But now it is understood the trust will grant provisional approval within the next few days.

However, the venture could yet prove difficult as it is understood the trust will attach several conditions to the project, such as how much the BBC can spend.

A source told the Guardian newspaper: "The devil is in the detail and if the conditions are too much it could be very challenging to run it as a commercial operation."

Last week it was announced that two more companies had joined Project Canvas. Broadcaster Channel 4 and broadband provider TalkTalk added their weight to the scheme and called for others to do the same.ADNFCR-2863-ID-19523566-ADNFCR
