Online video 'goes mainstream' in 2009 2009 has seen online video evolve into an effective tool for marketing companies.
The last 12 months has seen corporate video production mature as an effective marketing tool.
Writing for techradar.com, Suranga Chandratillake suggests that online video "truly came of age" in 2009, with the phenomenon having started with dramatic chipmunks and soap in a microwave.
During 2009, however, BBC's iPlayer went mainstream, while Hulu.com has become increasingly popular in the US ahead of its international expansion.
"Obama's inauguration drew 70 million viewers online; global web traffic shot up 33 per cent as the world logged on to watch the funeral of Michael Jackson; and half a million people paid to watch the England vs Ukraine football match streaming live over the Internet," Mr Chandratillake comments.
Predicting what the next 12 months will hold for online video, the technology expert says that "the fragmentation of content across the web will continue", with this ranging from newspaper editorials, TV episodes and music videos.
Mr Chandratillake is a successful technology entrepreneur, having established video search engine blinkx in 2004.
