Mobile requests for BBC iPlayer video productions rise by one million in June Surge in requests from mobile devices attributed to iPad.
New figures from the BBC have revealed the growing popularity of internet video productions on mobile devices.
The broadcaster received a total of seven million requests for programming streamed to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers.
This is a rise of one million compared to figures for May, most of which has been attributed to Apple's new iPad, which already accounts for ten per cent of all requests from portable devices.
Across all platforms, BBC iPlayer received 117 million requests, a drop of 13 million from May attributed to seasonal fluctuations.
The figure is a vast increase on June last year, which only saw 76 million requests.
During the month, an average of 3.3 million requests were received each day from 1.3 million users.
This week, Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt said a rethink may be needed in the way the licence fee is collected in order to accommodate for the increasingly popular online catch-up service.
