Mobile internet expected to boom over coming years More than 60 per cent of mobile phones worldwide will have a built in web browser by 2015, says report.
The reach of online video productions could be extended thanks to a predicted rise in the number of mobile phones equipped with internet browsers.
A new report by ABI Research has forecast that by 2015 more than 60 per cent of mobile phones worldwide will have a built in web browser.
This equates to 3.7 billion internet-equipped mobile phones across the globe.
There are currently two distinct models for mobile-based internet, said the report.
On one hand there are "full internet browsers", as used by high-power devices such as smartphones.
But on the other, a new family of proxy-based browsers has emerged designed to be used by cheaper, less powerful devices.
"These browsers move some caching and processing off the phone to a nearby server, allowing the browser to run on lower-cost processors and requiring as little as 4Mb of memory. That means these browsers can be used on even the lowest-cost phones," said Mark Beccue, a senior analyst at ABI.
The report predicts that by 2012, the installed base of full internet browsers will exceed that of the proxy-based alternative.
A recent eMarketer report predicted that the number of US consumers watching video productions on mobile phones will double by 2013.
