The number of Americans watching video online has risen dramatically, a new survey has found.

Nielsen's Three Screen Report studied the different platforms people in the US use to view video and how long each week they use them.

It found that in the third quarter of 2009 the time the average American spent watching internet video rose by 34.9 per cent compared to the third quarter of 2008.

The report discovered that the average consumer spent four hours using the internet each week and 22 minutes watching online video.

Surprisingly, the age group with the largest number of internet video users were the 45-54s was making up 22 per cent. However, those found to spend the most time watching videos online were aged between 18 and 34.

According to the report, another important trend was the increase of social media sites as a video platform. Time spent viewing video on social networking sites increased 98 per cent from October 2008 to October 2009.

"The embedding of videos into existing social networks only strengthens the viral nature of online video," the report said.

Earlier this year, it was announced that spending on online marketing went up in 2009. According to the European Interactive Advertising Association, 83 per cent of marketers increased online ad spend.ADNFCR-2863-ID-19500203-ADNFCR
