Local newspapers criticised for online payment scheme The decision to have some local newspapers charge for their content has been criticised by a magazine.
A number of local news providers are to begin charging for their online content.
The small-scale trial, which has been launched by newspaper publisher Johnston Press, has been criticised by Web User magazine.
Ben Camm-Jones suggested that the move could lead to viewers heading straight to other newspapers that don't charge.
"Johnston Press is effectively driving its audience directly into the hands of its competitors," he said.
"Given the reach of the BBC local news services, I imagine that many surfers will simply end up on the BBC site."
Online video content could also be affected, with fewer people viewing what is on the site.
