Judgement just weeks away on BBC video production project

Photo for this news articleBBC Trust expects to deliver verdict on Project Canvass in a matter of weeks.

The go-ahead for Project Canvas, a BBC-led initiative to bring online video productions to television sets, could be given in a matter of weeks.

Project Canvas, which involves a number of companies including Channel 4 and ITV, has already been approved by competition regulators at Office of Fair Trading.

However, the BBC Trust needs to appraise the project to determine if it will contravene any of the organisation's guidelines.

Speaking to New Media Age, a spokesperson for the trust said: "No exact date has been set but we're aiming to conclude it as soon as possible, and it will be weeks not months."

A possible name for the new product has also emerged this week.

According to the Financial Times, the name YouView has been registered by the project at the Intellectual Property Office.

The finished device is expected to be a set-top box that provides TV programmes streamed directly from the internet without a subscription charge.
