Internet-capable TV sales to rise As many as one-fifth of TVs bought next year could have internet connections.
Sales of TVs that can connect to the internet are expected to rise in 2010, it has been reported.
According to Futurescore Consulting, 20 per cent of TVs shipped to Europe next year will be internet capable.
The news could mean greater exposure to customers for websites with video content.
Research Consultant David Watkins said: "In Europe, four of the major brands have already launched connected TV products that go beyond basic home networking functionality and allow delivery of over-the-top web services.
"This includes basic weather and news pages, social networking, video streaming and catch-up TV."
He went on to say that he expected content to be the next consumer battleground, particularly in relation to video and social media interaction.
The BBC recently unveiled proposals for a joint venture with ITV and BT called Project Canvass, which will allow viewers to access internet videos through a set-top box.
If the plan goes ahead, a catch-up and video on demand service could be made available over the internet direct to television including content from a number of providers such as the main terrestrial broadcasters, Sky and Google.
