Government scraps broadband tax Proposal to tax broadband users 50p a month scrapped by new government.
Companies that use internet video productions could benefit from the government's decision to scrap a proposed broadband tax.
Revealed in yesterday's emergency Budget, chancellor George Osborne announced that Labour's proposal to tax those with a broadband connection 50p a month will not be carried out.
It is hoped this will encourage more people to buy broadband services, something that could increase the scope of reach for online video productions.
Commenting on the new government's decision, Chris Marling, Broadband Genie editor, said: "It was always hard to see the point in such a levy and canning the idea can only be a good thing. We can only hope things do not stop there though."
The money made from the tax was intended to fund a roll-out of high speed broadband across the UK. However, others believe this is best done through private enterprise.
Other measures announced in the emergency Budget included a rise in VAT to 20 per cent, which will come into effect next year.
