Fifth of shoppers start with online search A new study has highlighted the importance of search engine optimisation.
Online retailers may want to consider video productions as a way to attract potential customers.
A new study has revealed that almost one-fifth of shoppers begin the buying process with a visit to a search engine.
This highlights the importance of search engine optimisation – the process of improving how high up on search results a website is – something video productions could help to improve.
The research, carried out by comScore on behalf of Searchandise Commerce and iProspect, found that 18 per cent of consumers start with an online search.
However, two-thirds of consumers actually begin the shopping process on the internet in total, with one in five going straight to retail websites.
Robert Murray, chief executive of iProspect, said: "Marketers simply cannot afford to have their offerings fail to show up in the search results.
"To remain competitive, they must have a holistic search strategy that understands and addresses a variety of information for all of the products they sell."
A recent eMarketer study forecast that 26 million people aged 14 and older in the UK will make at least one online purchase per month in 2010.
