Expert reveals website viewing habits Web users focus 80 per cent of attention on information above the page fold.
Companies that use video productions should place them towards the top of the page if they want them to get the most attention from visitors.
That is the suggestion of the findings of a study by usability expert Jakob Nielsen.
He found that web users spend 80 per cent of their time looking at information above the page fold (the part of the page that can be immediately viewed in a browser without scrolling down).
Writing on his blog, Mr Nielsen said: "The implications are clear: the material that's the most important for the users' goals or your business goals should be above the fold."
Commenting on the study's findings, user researcher Louise Richardson also recommended website developers put navigation tools towards the top of landing pages.
"With navigation, assume that users will not be scrolling to find it," she said.
According to Internetworldstats.com, there are over 418 million internet users in Europe alone, with a total population penetration of 52 per cent.
