Engagement on social media platforms 'should be fun' An industry specialist has urged online marketers to make social media content engaging and fun.
Companies should focus on providing fun, user-friendly content when seeking to engage with younger social media users, it has been argued.
Rachel Arthur, associate marketing editor for Worth Global Style Network, an online research body for the fashion and style industries, claimed that "a 90/10 strategy" - whereby 90 per cent of messages are social and fun and ten per cent push a product – is the best way to engage with members of Generation Y (16 to 25-year olds).
She observed that this demographic spends much of its time on social media, with 96 per cent of people using some form of the networking platform.
"The point is that these people are there and you can cut through that. They're talking to all of their friends in that space and there's no reason why you can't get in on that conversation too – you just have to go about it in the right way," she commented.
Ms Arthur's advice could apply to a range of marketing options including website promotions and online video productions. According to recent research by eMarketer, 26 million people aged 14 or older in the UK will make at least one online purchase per month this year.
