Digital Britain report criticised by websites

Photo for this news articleYahoo, Facebook, Google and eBay have written a joint letter to the government about their concerns over the Digital Britain report.

A group of influential websites have voiced their concerns about the Digital Britain report outlined by the government.

Facebook, Yahoo, eBay and Google have all signed a joint letter expressing their worries about copyright issues.

"We believe the bill's Clause 17 – which gives any future Secretary of State unprecedented and sweeping powers to amend the Copyright, Design and Patent Act – opens the way for arbitrary measures," the letter stated.

"The power could be used, for example, to introduce additional technical measures or increase monitoring of user data even when no illegal practice has taken place."

It added that the clause was "so wide" that it could "risk legitimate consumer use of current technology".

The letter concluded with a request to remove Clause 17 from the bill.

The Digital Economy Bill is having its Second Reading in the House of Lords.
