Competing platforms may cause trouble for Canvas

Project Canvas, the plan headed by the BBC to deliver internet video content over television sets via set-top boxes, may struggle against competing platforms, an expert has claimed.

Ian Maude, head of internet at Enders Analysis, told the Financial Times that technological and regulatory challenges could delay the project until 2011, allowing competitors to gain an advantage.

"The longer Canvas is delayed the harder it will be to get traction due to the plethora of competing platforms from consumer electronics companies, such as Sony and Samsung, and Sky," he said.

As the newspaper points out, there are already a range of alternatives on the market, such as Fetch TV, which allows internet access for free and pay-per-view and video games consoles such as the PS3 which can stream content from sites such as iPlayer through TVs.

Another device, called the Boxee Box, was recently released in the US. The Box allows TVs to connect to the internet and stream video content. It also has a built-in webcam and is compatible with social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook.ADNFCR-2863-ID-19533644-ADNFCR
