Channel 4 director urges consideration of online content charging The director of content and television and Channel 4 has indicated he wants people to pay for online programmes.
Channel 4's director of content and television has suggested that the broadcaster may have to consider whether they should charge for online viewing.
Kevin Lygo said at the Media Festival in Manchester that some programmes are receiving more views online than they are during the original showing.
"Why shouldn't we, on a show like Skins or The Inbetweeners or The IT Crowd or Peep Show, put the first episodes out [online for free] and then say, ' You can watch the next two episodes now for £5 or £10'."
From the beginning of 2010, the public will be able to view Channel 4 programmes for free, in full, on YouTube.
The British broadcaster currently places its shows online for viewing on its 4OD website.
Fellow broadcasters the BBC and ITV both have their own online services for the public to view programmes already broadcast, although they are only available for people in the UK.
