Channel 4 and TalkTalk join Project Canvas Broadcaster and broadband provider join scheme to provide internet video through TV sets.
Project Canvas, the BBC fronted proposal for a next generation set-top box providing internet video, has signed up Channel 4 and TalkTalk as its latest recruits.
The two companies join existing partners the BBC, ITV, Channel Five and BT in the effort to provide internet content to Freesat and Freeview customers over a broadband connection.
However the project is yet to receive backing from the BBC trust, which the BBC needs in order to continue its involvement.
The companies involved are now calling for "expressions of interest" from other firms interested in the project. Project Canvas programme director Richard Halton said: "By seamlessly converging broadband and broadcast content, Project Canvas can help secure the future of free-to-air broadcasting and create an open platform that gives online services a route to the TV set." The news comes after Google announced it is looking at new ways of generating revenue for its video sharing website YouTube.
One possibility is to introduce a monthly subscription fee for long-form content such as TV programmes, Google's vice president of content partnerships, David Eun, told Reuters.
