The online advertising market in Australia has continued to grow despite the economic conditions being experienced in the country.

A report compiled by PricewaterhouseCoopers on behalf of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) of Australia found that the third quarter of 2009 saw online advertising in Australia total AU$466 million.

The report also found that online video advertising expenditure was "on a par" with the US and UK.

Paul Fisher, chief executive of IAB Australia said: "Online is now a trusted, core and essential component of effective marketing communications."

He added that this was possible thanks to developments in online audience measurement and research demonstrating the effectiveness of internet ads.

The three industries most likely to use general display advertising, such as video, were the IT sector, motor vehicle companies and finance businesses.

According to statistics from comScore, the UK continues to have a significant number of internet users utilising online video content – around 80 per cent accessed one in January 2009.
