YouTube aims to offer better video search Improved search facility could help website become as big as TV, says YouTube.
Video sharing site YouTube has said it hopes to rival television in the future but that to do this it needs to improve the way users search for videos.
Hunter Walk, head of product management at the Google-owned company, said he wanted people to spend as much time watching YouTube videos as they do in front of the TV.
He told the New York Times: "People say, YouTube is so big, but I really see that we have a ways to go."
The paper also revealed that Mr Walk's team are looking at the site's search facility as one of the key ways to do this.
In particular, YouTube's ability to suggest relevant content that users may want to view is seen as important in prolonging the time people spend on the site each time they visit.
"If we guess wrong, you could leave us sooner," said Jamie Davidson, an associate product manager. "But if we guess correctly, we may get you to watch another ten videos. This is very hard."
A recent study by anti-virus software makers Symantec found that YouTube was the most searched for term on the internet in 2009 by those under the age of 18.
