YouTube 'Feather' tested ahead of rollout A special 'Feather' version of YouTube is to be launched for people who have low bandwidth access.
YouTube has launched a special version of its services for areas that cannot download videos at optimum speed.
Writing on the YouTube blog, Chris Zacharias, an engineer at the site, said that the launch of the 'Feather' service would allow people to see videos at a lower bandwidth.
"Related videos, comments and other familiar features from the current watch page are kept to a minimum," he said.
"All of this results in a user experience that aims to keep things simple and the videos loading and playing quickly."
Currently the system is only available on specialist part of the site TestTube, but if it is widely used it is intended it will be rolled out across YouTube.
YouTube recently launched its first print adverts to advertise the fact that it is to display full length programmes from Channel 4, such as Peep Show and Gordon Ramsay's F Word.
