Viral video productions allow smaller companies to 'punch above their weight'

Successful viral video productions can allow smaller companies to compete with the marketing campaigns of much bigger organisations, it has been claimed.

Speaking to cnn.com, Matt Cutler, of US online video data and analysis firm Visible Measures, said that by making use of social websites, smaller businesses can run successful marketing campaigns.

He told the news provider: "In specific categories you have smaller, upstart players who are much more aggressive in the medium."

Mr Cutler added that American fast-food chain Carl's Jr has "punched above their weight because they've been fairly innovative when it comes to social video."

Internet culture expert Tim Hwang added that large amounts of money does not have to be spent on video productions in order for them to become viral, in fact it is often the inverse that is true.

"The big ironic thing is that trying too hard doesn't get you far," he said. "In fact, trying too hard seems to dampen the ability to get you passed around the Web."

It was recently predicted by the Cisco Systems' Visual Networking Index Forecast that video productions will make up 91 per cent of internet traffic by the year 2014.
