Online videos to get auto-captions Captions are to come to Google Videos and YouTube thanks to a voice recognition system.
Google has created machine-generated automatic captions for Google Video and YouTube.
Deaf software engineer Ken Harrenstein posted about his excitement at the new technological development on the Google Blog.
"Auto-caps use the same voice recognition algorithms in Google Voice to automatically generate captions for video," he wrote.
"The captions will not always be perfect, but even when they're off they can still be helpful and the technology will continue to improve with time."
As well as automatic transcription Google has also launched automatic caption timing to make it easier for captions to be written out manually by the uploader.
"Today I'm more hopeful than ever that we'll achieve our long-term goal of making videos universally accessible," Mr Harrenstein wrote.
Last week brand advisers Elemental wrote about the benefits of placing text next to video to boost search engine optimisation rankings.
Rachel Hawkes, an account director at the company, suggested that it should be "standard practice" to have text descriptions next to video displays.
