Google will 'grow in scale' to cope with digital data boom Expert predicts large search engines will continue to dominate as digital data expands.
The increasing popularity of data rich digital content such as videos will be met by an increase of the scope of search engines such as Google.
That is according to Shane Wright, IT director of market research firm eDigitalResearch.
He predicts that the majority of online traffic will still be dealt with by cross-content search engines in the future, instead of ones that focus on a particular subsection, such as video or images.
"I think services like Google will grow in scale; there's a basic user-need to have one primary source to ask for information," he said.
"However, I think there will also be an explosion in a number of smaller, specialist services ... but the body of traffic will be through large all-encompassing providers."
His comments follow an IDC report which predicted that between 2009 and 2020 the size of the 'digital universe' - the amount of information stored and distributed digitally- will grow by a factor of 44.
