YouTube to support 4K video productions Videos four times the size of HD now compatible with YouTube.
It has been announced that YouTube now supports video productions shot in 4K resolution.
Relating to the number of pixels used to produce an image, 4K means videos can be shown in ultra-high quality.
This could be of particular use to those looking to use YouTube for corporate video productions as it means videos can be shown on very large screens without any deterioration to the image.
To put the image detail of 4K videos in perspective, YouTube points out that IMAX movies are shown through 2K projectors and that the optimum screen size for a 4K video is 25 feet.
With 4,096 vertical lines of resolution, 4K is around four times bigger than Full HD video, at 1,080 pixels.
"We're excited about this latest step in the evolution of online video. We've been impressed by the 1,080p videos you've uploaded over the last seven months and can't wait to see (in 4K!) what you do next," Ramesh Sarukkai, YouTube Engineer told users via the company's blog.
Last week, YouTube announced the launch of Leanback, which offers users a continuous stream of videos selected automatically based on individual preferences.
