YouTube to enable interactive video production? Google files new patent to offer interactive gaming on YouTube videos.
Video sharing site YouTube looks set to bring a new element to online video production after a patent was filed by parent company Google.
The patent appears to relate to a new feature that will allow viewers to interact with the videos they watch, or "collaborative generation of interactive features for digital videos" as the patent puts it.
Google calls the patent "Web-Based System for Generation of Interactive Games Based on Digital Videos".
It describes a way of making the already in use annotations on YouTube videos perform actions and affect what happens in the video.
"Annotations can be used to construct interactive games using videos, such as a game in which clicking on different portions of a video leads to different outcomes," the patent reads.
A YouTube executive said earlier this week that he wants to see YouTube become as widely popular as television.
Hunter Walk, head of product management told the New York Times that improving the search facility on the website was one of the main ways they intend to achieve this.
