Vimeo introduces ‘universal’ video production player New video player automatically detects which format to use based on what type of device is accessing the video.
A new online media player capable of showing video productions in a variety of formats on third party websites has been launched by Vimeo.
The video sharing site has unveiled its new Universal Player, which is an embeddable version of a video player it launched earlier this year that made use of HTML 5 - a new standard for presenting video on the web.
It means bloggers and other websites can post videos using the Vimeo player on their own sites.
Furthermore, the video production player is able to detect what kind of device is viewing the video and choose the video format based on the device's capabilities.
“For example, it will serve mobile video to iPhones and Androids and HD to iPads and Desktops. On other mobile devices it can use the native player of the device or an optimised mobile Flash player with bigger controls,” explained a post on Vimeo’s official blog.
Started in 2004, Vimeo currently has over 25 million unique visitors to its site every month.
