Video productions to make up 91 percent of global consumer web traffic by 2014

Global internet traffic is to more than quadruple over the next four years, it has been predicted, with video productions being the main driver of growth.

According to Cisco Systems' Visual Networking Index Forecast, there will be nearly 64 exabytes of global IP traffic per month in 2014.

This is the equivalent of 16 billion DVDs, 21 trillion MP3's or 399 quadrillion text messages.

Video productions will make up 91 per cent of this traffic, the firm said, with the number of online video users reaching the one billion mark.

It will mean that, for the first time, video will overtake global peer-to peer traffic as the number one source of data on the internet. This will happen as early as the end of 2010.

"The Cisco VNI Forecast offers a global snapshot of video's significance in our daily lives and signals the need for further network preparations to support the quadrupling of the Internet and the more than 1 billion online video users by 2014," said Pankaj Patel, senior vice president and general manager at Cisco.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Google at strengthened its hold on the US online video streaming industry, increasing its market share to 43.2 per cent in April.
