Survey suggests free video productions are best

Providing video productions for free rather than charging may be the best way to attract visitors to a website, a new report suggests.

KPMG’s Consumers & Convergence IV survey has revealed that UK internet users are less willing to pay for online content than those from other countries.

Some 81 per cent of UK respondents to the poll said they would go elsewhere if a website began charging for previously free content.

However, globally, 43 per cent are willing to pay for access to sites, rising to 59 per cent in the Asia-Pacific region.

Half of UK internet users are willing to pay for games, said the survey, 44 per cent for music but just 35 per cent for video.

Tudor Aw, head of technology at KPMG Europe said, "UK consumers still haven't come around to the idea of paying for content and are clear they'll move to other sites if paywalls are put up."

Earlier this year, New International, owner of the Times and Sunday Times, introduced a paywall for access to its newspapers' websites.
