Photo for this news articleVideo service from Sony has been launched in the UK and Australia.

Crackle, Sony Pictures Entertainment multi-platform video production portal, is now available in the UK.

The online video player, which was originally launched in the US in 2007, features ad-funded short- and long-form TV shows and movies.

Its content will also be available through a host of other channels, such as AOL, Boxee, Dailymotion and YouTube, and on Sony's Bravia web-enabled TVs.

Eric Berger, Sony's senior VP of digital networks, said: "Crackle has built a proven distribution and ad network in the US that we’re now replicating around the world. Our content is chosen and programmed for the true video buff who loves movies and TV shows and also wants to discover the best new content on the web."

The service is also being launched in Australia, simultaneously to the UK release.

Sony recently announced it is to film this summer's World Cup games in 3D, the first time this has been done.

It will broadcast them in selected cinemas and public viewing areas across the world.
