Project Canvas wins BBC Trust approval

The BBC-led project to create a online-TV video production streaming service took a step forward today when the BBC Trust gave its approval.

Project Canvas is a venture involving a number of content providers, including Channel 4, ITV and Five.

It aims to provide a freeview service in which internet on-demand video productions are streamed directly to TV sets.

However, to go ahead with the plans, the BBC needed approval from the Trust, which ensures the any BBC venture complies with the law and its own policies.

"The Trust has concluded that Project Canvas will deliver significant public value for licence fee payers - people with a broadband connection will be able to access a wide range of on-demand content including BBC iPlayer, free of charge, through their TV sets," said Diane Coyle, BBC trustee and chair of the trust's strategic approvals committee.

The BBC has largely enjoyed success in the online arena to date, thanks to its increasingly popular iPlayer service.
