Panasonic chief: Internet to provide 3D video production breakthrough Popularity of internet video could mean 3D productions take off online first.
Growing popularity of internet video productions could mean the medium provides the catalyst for the spread of 3D, it has been claimed.
Speaking to the Financial Times, the head of Panasonic's TV Hirotoshi Uehara said the online environment could be the arena to capitalise on the current popularity of 3D in the wake of films such as Avatar.
"Recently more people are watching television via the internet, and that is unlimited, so I think there is a chance that the breakthrough for 3D will be via internet TV," he told the news provider.
His comments come as Panasonic announced it was increasing production of 3D TVs in the US due to strong demand.
However, Mr Uehara said he thought 3D could have applications outside of entertainment.
"My thinking is that 3D shouldn't just be limited to broadcast television, it should reach a range of industries, such as video conferencing or PowerPoint presentations," he said.
Panasonic's rival Sony recently announced it was launching its internet-connected 3D TV range to the UK in June.
