New YouTube tool could boost video production streaming speeds

YouTube has released a new tool that could serve to boost broadband speeds and therefore improve the streaming speed of online video productions.

The website has developed a video speed dashboard which tells viewers how fast video is being downloaded from the site.

It will also provide comparison data for YouTube, broken down by location and internet service provider (ISP).

This will allow viewers to see which factors are limiting their download speed and could result in pressure being put on ISPs to improve their service.

"A higher YouTube video speed translates to a better and faster experience not just for YouTube videos but for the web in general; and by making this speed data available to users we would like to continue our ongoing efforts to make the web faster," said YouTube on a blog post.

Another change brought in by YouTube recently is a new 'safe mode' which allows parents to set access restrictions to prevent children from viewing inappropriate content on the site.
