Move towards captions for online video productions
A move towards increasing the use of closed captioning for online video productions is gathering pace, it has been claimed.
According to an article in the New York Times, a number of video production hosting sites are looking at way to incorporate captioning for the hard of hearing, and so increase the potential audience for online video.
One example is YouTube, which recently launched a service which makes use of voice recognition technology to automatically provide captions for its videos.
Hulu, another major video hosting site, also offers captions for many of its videos, the newspaper reports.
"Users send us feedback about closed captions more often than almost any other feature, so what started as a small side project has turned into a very important part of our user experience," Eric Feng, the chief technical officer for Hulu, told the news provider.
According to the Royal National Institute for Deaf People, there are around nine million deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK.
