More content needed for mobile video productions to take off

Internet video productions on mobile devices will be more likely to attract audiences if more content is created for the platform.

That is the opinion of Dr Steve Smith, research director at Coda Research Consultancy, a current and emerging technologies, services and media research company.

He argues that sporting events such as the recent World Cup will have helped attract people to mobile video, but that a lack of good content is holding back the market.

"There are a lot of issues dependent upon the content being there," he said.

"Any sporting event should help drive mobile video, but post-that there needs to be other content available."

Despite this, a Coda Research Consultancy study published earlier this year estimated that two-thirds of mobile handset data traffic in the USA by 2015 will be from video.

Dr Smith was commenting following a recent announcement by YouTube that it is launching a new site specifically for mobile users.
