Mobile internet 'no great threat' to fixed internet People will still need broadband connections despite rise in mobile interent, it has been claimed.
Companies will still find a fixed-internet audience for online video productions despite the rise of internet-connected mobile devices, it has been suggested.
Natasha Stokes, editor of Mobile Choice, has said that broadband internet will still be needed for bigger files, such as video productions, that smartphones and other mobile internet devices will not be capable of downloading.
"[Mobile intternet] won't pose a great threat to fixed internet - until universal Wi-Fi is a reality, you'll still want a fixed broadband/Wi-Fi connection for large downloads and video/music streaming," she commented.
However, she also predicts that mobile internet will continue to grow in popularity as the technology becomes more advanced.
"The mobile internet trend will grow as smartphone use becomes even more popular, and the phones themselves more technologically capable," she said.
Ms Stokes's comments follow recent figures from the Office for National Statistics that revealed, in 2010, 31 per cent of internet users connected via a mobile phone, up from 23 per cent in 2009.
