The advent of the HTML5 web standard will be a 'game-changer' for online video production, it has been claimed.
HTML5 is a new formatting code that provides websites with a range of additional options in their use of media.
Although it is not yet universally used, Rebecca Lieb of Econsultancy believes that it is poised to make a big impact on video, as well as mobile platforms and search.
In an article for the Econsultancy blog, she writes: "HTML5 offers cutting edge levels of interactivity, such as the ability to edit the content on a page, or to drag and drop objects from one window to another."
Furthermore, video is currently displayed using third-party add-ons, such as Adobe Flash Player, whereas HTML5 allows media to play through the web browser.
This means it can be used for mobile devices, which are becoming increasingly popular, and can aid search engine optimisation.
"Another area in which HTML5 gets interesting is with audio and video, which can be integrated into a site's code. Whereas Flash content is all but invisible to search engines, HTML5 allows for more accurate indexing and tagging of multimedia content," she writes.
The band Arcade Fire recently released an online interactive music video that made use of HTML5.
