Guggenheim exhibition set to celebrate 'inspiring' video productions

Corporate video production, as well as home-made efforts, could play a central part in the latest exhibition from the prestigious Guggenheim Museum.

Highlighting the growing seriousness with which video productions are being taken by both consumers and arts institutions alike, the prestigious New York arts centre has invited YouTube users to submit their most innovative works.

While many of the video productions posted on the content-sharing site are of poor quality, the museum is confident that the new initiative will unearth some real gems, with a jury of professional artists set to choose the top 20 efforts, which will then be displayed at Guggenheim museums around the world in the autumn.

Commenting on the scheme, YouTube senior marketing manager Ed Snaders explained that, when done well, video productions can do more than entertain.

"There's a lot of video out there that has inspired," he said.

"We're trying to bubble that content to the surface. The Guggenheim wants to be dazzled."

The launch of the new initiative comes just days after the latest Cisco Systems Visual Networking Index predicted that video productions are set to account for 91 per cent of global consumer web traffic by 2014.
