Google launches new option for video production streaming WebM codec for playing online videos unveiled by Google.
Video production users will now have another way to watch videos thanks to a new product from Google.
The search engine giant has unveiled its new WebM codec, a royalty-free, open source format for watching videos in internet browsers.
It is based on the VP8, a web technology from On2 Technologies, a company that Google acquired in February.
The search engine giant made the announcement at its Google I/O conference in San Francisco this week.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Sundar Pichai, Google's vice president of product marketing, told delegates: "We think video should be a free and open option for all. It's really important to have high quality and open video."
WebM will be seen as a rival to Adobe's Flash, which has until now been the dominant online video player, and HTML5, which is favoured by Apple.
Google-owned YouTube recently launched a service whereby users can opt to view videos in the HTML5 format.
