Google TV could bring greater access to video productions Service that will bring the web to TV sets will be launched worldwide next year, says Google.
A new venture by Google that could help bring online video productions to TV sets is to be launched in the US this autumn and globally next year.
Eric Schmidt, Google's chief executive, told delegates at the IFA technology show in Berlin that development of Google TV, which was unveiled at the company's annual I/O developer conference in May, is currently on track.
The new service will aim to integrate the web with TV and will allow users to search and access websites directly from their television sets.
Mr Schmidt confirmed Google TV will be free and that Google is looking to work with TV studios and production companies to provide new premium content for the service.
"We will work with content providers, but it is very unlikely that [Google] will get into actual content production," said Schmidt.
Sony has already agreed to embed the service into its TV sets with other manufacturers thought to be considering doing likewise.
It follows a recent announcement from Apple that it is improving its Apple TV device, which allows users to stream internet videos through their TV.
