A new heavy-duty internet router has been launched by Cisco Systems designed to cope with the increasing video production online traffic.

Routers play an important role in carrying internet traffic with core routers, such as the new Cisco model, providing high-capacity data transfer for the internet's busiest areas such as broadband providers.

The new CRS-3 is three times faster than its predecessor and can handle a massive 322 terabits of traffic per second.

This is enough to accommodate every man, woman and child in China to make a video call simultaneously, Cisco said.

John Chambers, Cisco chairman and chief executive, said that the new router was necessary due to the rapid expansion of video use on the internet.

"Video brings the Internet to life," he said. "You are moving from a messaging platform to a video platform."

The latest comScore Video Metrix report found that the number of US YouTube viewers reached an all-time high in January of 173 million, with 12.7 billion videos being watched by US internet users alone.
