BBC iPlayer to trial on Freesat

Photo for this news articleFreesat is to trial BBC iPlayer on a restricted number of TV sets early next month.

People may soon be able to watch online videos from the BBC on their television.

The broadcaster's head of TV platforms, Rahul Chakkara, noted that BBC iPlayer will be trialled for some Freesat viewers from December 7th.

Speaking to the BBC, he said that the move to make internet video available on TV has been a challenge.

"Set top boxes don't have the same processing power or memory as a typical PC. The software inside the box is made for broadcast," he said.

Those participating in the trial will have to enter a code to access the player but it is believed that it should be more freely available by Christmas.

According to the BBC, ITV Player will also attempt to trial a similar technology early in 2010.

Around 750,000 homes in the UK currently use Freesat, which has attracted more customers than Sky in the last six months.
