BBC iPlayer to integrate social media with video productions iPlayer to link with Facebook and Twitter, as well as rival video production sites.
Video productions on BBC iPlayer are to benefit from the integration of social media with the website.
The BBC has unveiled a new version of iPlayer which allows users to recommend videos and let friends know what they have been watching through sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Microsoft's instant messaging service.
In addition, the BBC has decided to link iPlayer with rival online video streaming sites.
For example, users will now be able to search for TV programmes streamed by other broadcasters on iPlayer and click straight through to where they can be watched, such as on 4OD or ITV Player.
According to the Press Association, Erik Huggers, the BBC director of future media and technology, said: "The launch of this version of the BBC iPlayer is part of our strategy to do fewer things even better and make it more simple, personal and connected.
"We must no longer try to do everything online, but focus on delivering genuinely world-class products like BBC iPlayer - which audiences love and which really embodies the BBC's core mission in a digital age."
The BBC is also working on plans to bring online video to TV sets under Project Canvas.
